Adventures of Sherlock Holmes; or, Held for Ransom ist ein amerikanischer Stummfilm. Regie führte J. Stuart Blackton für die Vitagraph Studios.[1]

Hintergrund

Es war der zweite Film, der auf Arthur Conan Doyles Sherlock Holmes basierte, nach dem Film Sherlock Holmes Baffled von 1900. Er wird in der Regel als erster Versuch gesehen, eine ernsthafte Holmes-Adaption zu verfilmen.[2][3]

Das Drehbuch von Theodore Liebler enthält Elemente aus der Novelle Das Zeichen der Vier.[4]

Veröffentlicht am 7. Oktober 1905, traten Maurice Costello als Sherlock Holmes, Kyrle Bellew als John Watson und J. Barney Sherry auf.[5] Für Costello war es die erste Rolle, bevor er ein so genanntes Matinée Idol wurde.[6]

Obwohl manchmal behauptet wird, der Film sei verloren, sind noch Fragmente in der Paper Print Collection der Library of Congress vorhanden.[7] Er wurde auf 35-mm-Schwarz-Weiß-Film gedreht und hat eine Länge von 725 Metern auf einer Rolle.[4]

Adventures of Sherlock Holmes; or, Held for Ransom is a 1905 American silent film directed by J. Stuart Blackton for Vitagraph Studios.[1] It was the second film based on Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, following the 1900 Mutoscope trick film Sherlock Holmes Baffled, and is usually regarded as the first attempt to film a "serious" Holmes adaptation.[2][3] The scenario was by Theodore Liebler based on elements of Conan Doyle's 1890 novel The Sign of the Four.[4]

По-видимому, первая попытка экранизации произведений Артура Конана Дойла о Шерлоке Холмсе (не считая 49-секундного фильма «Озадаченный Шерлок Холмс» 1900 года[1]). Немой фильм представлял собой один ролик киноплёнки (то есть, имел продолжительность от 8[2] до 14 минут[3]). Не сохранился, однако в библиотеке Конгресса хранятся 14 футов бумажных оттисков с киноплёнки[3].
