On January 13, 2022, it was announced that HBO Max gave a series order to Degrassi, a reboot of the franchise consisting of 10 hour-long episodes, which is set to premiere in 2023.[1] Production is scheduled to begin in Toronto in the summer of 2022. Casting commenced for the series with a search for 13- to 20-year-old youth of all backgrounds. Filming began on July 1, 2022, and is expected to end on November 30, 2022.[1][failed verification]
The series is being developed by Lara Azzopardi and Julia Cohen, who previously wrote the Degrassi: The Next Generation episode "Heat of The Moment".[2][3] Linda Schuyler, franchise co-creator, and Stephen Stohn, creative partner on The Next Generation, issued a joint statement confirming that they would not be involved in the new series, stating that the "time is perfect to pass the baton" to Azzopardi and Cohen.[2] In August 2022, reports surfaced of a restructuring of HBO Max, which led to fears of the reboot's potential cancellation.[4]
