However, McCall, Harry and Melody later learn that Ali wasn’t a dissident, rather he was in love with one who is, Reza Shaheen. Reza goes as far to offer himself to the secret service in exchange for Ali to be released, but McCall calls on Bishop, who was working with the Saudis, to do so himself. In the NYPD, detective Ken Mallory takes over the vigilante case. Upon learning of her involvement in the Shah case, he arrives to arrest the secret service men who held Ali captive. Dante warns him that McCall is never present at arrest other then making sure things lead to them. The Saudi secret service is not allowed to ever pursue Ali again, however, Mira has to move back to Saudi Arabia and Reza could still be exposed to the service if he maintains his claim to be “Dissident X”. McCall however doubts this, noting he might as well have done it to protect Ali in the first place.

Following the arrest and speedy trial of Tim Colvin, the jurors gather to determine their verdict. Aunt Vi, being one of the jurors, begins to doubt Colvin’s guilt, sensing that some evidence doesn’t add up. McCall covertly investigates, though with no friend at the police, she, Harry and Mel look through the limited evidence available. McCall questions the victim, Sarah Ross’s, roommate Olivia Simmons who, although doubtful, stands by her identification of Colvin. McCall further discovers that Colvin never was at the bar Ross left, and that he must have been mistaken for another black man, later specified to be Devin Ellis, who has an alibi for that night. Dante manages to secure a meeting with Colvin, while McCall questions the eyewitness that saw Colvin hail a cab. Colvin admits that he entered Ross’ building and her apartment, but left some time later and waited for his cab in the reception. Aunt Vi begins to have second thoughts when the lead juror accuses her of racial bias. In the end, she sets it aside and expresses an open mind to Colvin’s guilt, using the circumstances to convince her fellow jurors of their decision. McCall deduces that the eyewitness, Christian Messina, was the Ross’ actual rapist and killer, though there is no solid evidence against him. Aunt Vi and her fellow jurors decides that Colvin is not guilty, clearing him of all charges. Dante decides to rejoin the NYPD after seeking advice from Colvin’s lawyer, and approaches Messina about Ross’ case.

Production

Development

In November 2019, CBS announced that a reboot was in development with Queen Latifah in the lead role as Robyn McCall. Andrew Marlowe and Terri Miller would serve as showrunners with Latifah herself as an executive producer.[40] On January 27, 2020, CBS issued a pilot order for the new version.[41] Production companies involved with the pilot include Flavor Unit, Davis Entertainment, Martin Chase Productions and CBS Television Studios and Universal Television. On May 8, 2020, it was announced that the production had been given a series order.[42] On March 9, 2021, CBS renewed the series for a second season.[43] On May 1, 2022, Terri Edda Miller and Andrew W. Marlowe stepped down as showrunners and are being replaced by Joseph C. Wilson and Adam Glass.[44]

On May 5, 2022, CBS renewed the series for its third and fourth seasons.[45]

Casting

In February 2020, it was announced that Liza Lapira and Lorraine Toussaint had been cast in the pilot's lead roles.[46][47] On March 3, 2020, it was announced that Tory Kittles joined the cast in a starring role.[48] On May 8, 2020, it was announced that Chris Noth joined a starring role along with Latifah.[49] On December 21, 2021, CBS and Universal Television announced Noth was terminated from the series after sexual assault allegations were made against him. His final appearance will be in the middle of the second season.[3] On January 3, 2022, it was reported that Noth made his last appearance in "Separated" due to allegations that he assaulted women in December 2021.[50] On September 20, 2022, it was announced that Donal Logue and Gloria Reuben joined the cast in undisclosed capacities for the third season.[51]

Filming

The pilot was slated to film in New York City in March 2020. Production was delayed as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States before filming could begin.[52] On February 9, 2021, it was reported that production had been temporarily suspended due to a positive COVID-19 test.[53]

Filming for the series has taken place in several locations in northern New Jersey, including Paterson, Newark, and Jersey City.[54] Exterior shots of a Jersey City home are used for Robyn McCall's residence.[55][56]

Broadcast

The Equalizer premiered on February 7, 2021 after Super Bowl LV on CBS.[57] The second season premiered on October 10, 2021.[58] The third season premiered on October 2, 2022.[59]

The series had its series premiere in Germany on Sky One on July 12, 2021[citation needed], in the UK on Sky Witness on August 3, 2021,[60] and in Italy on Sky Investigation (local version of Sky Witness) on October 3, 2021.[citation needed]

Marketing

On May 19, 2020, a 30-second teaser featuring Queen Latifah explaining her involvement in the series was released by CBS.[61] On January 9, 2021, CBS released the first official teaser for the series.[62]

Reception

Critical response

On Rotten Tomatoes, the series has an approval rating of 67% based on reviews from 30 critics, with an average rating of 6/10. The website's critical consensus states, "Queen Latifah returns to the small screen in full command of her craft—if only The Equalizer's overly-engineered early episodes were on her level."[63] On Metacritic, it has a weighted average score of 57 out of 100, based on 15 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[64]

Future

In January 2021, when asked about the show's relationship to the film series starring Denzel Washington, Marlowe stated that while they are focusing on establishing the television series to stand on its own, they are leaving the opportunity open for a crossover between the two in the future.[73]
