Premise

Young couple Margot and Tyler travel to a remote island to eat at Hawthorne, an exclusive restaurant run by celebrity chef Julian Slowik, who has prepared a lavish molecular gastronomy menu where food is treated as conceptual art, although his approach to cuisine has some shocking surprises for the wealthy guests.

Cast

Production

Will Tracy dined at Cornelius Sjømatrestaurant [3][4][5][6] during a honeymoon and later suggested a story to Seth Reiss.[7]

In April 2019, it was announced that Emma Stone and Ralph Fiennes would star in The Menu, with Alexander Payne attached to direct.[8] In December, the screenplay appeared on the annual Black List, a survey showcasing the most popular films still in development.[9] By May 2020, Searchlight Pictures held the distribution rights, and Payne and Stone had left the film due to scheduling conflicts, with Mark Mylod replacing Payne as director.[10]

In June 2021, Fiennes rejoined the cast, with Anya Taylor-Joy in negotiations to star to replace Stone.[11] She would be confirmed the next month, in addition to Hong Chau and Nicholas Hoult joining the cast.[12][13] John Leguizamo,[14] Janet McTeer,[15] Judith Light,[16] Reed Birney,[17] Rob Yang,[18] and Aimee Carrero would join in September.[19] In October, Paul Adelstein, Arturo Castro, Mark St. Cyr, Rebecca Koon, and Peter Grosz were confirmed as part of the ensemble cast.[20]

Filming began on September 3, 2021, in Savannah, Georgia, with cinematographer Peter Deming.[21][20] Christopher Tellefsen is the film's editor.[20]

Release

The Menu premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2022.[2] It also made its US premiere at Fantastic Fest in the same month.[22] It is set to be released in theaters on November 18, 2022.[23]

Reception

Box office

In the United States and Canada, The Menu will be released alongside She Said, and is projected to gross $7–10 million from 3,100 theaters in its opening weekend, the widest release in Searchlight's history.[24][25]

Critical response

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 91% of 75 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.7/10. The website's consensus reads, "While its social commentary relies on basic ingredients, The Menu serves up black comedy with plenty of flavor."[26] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 70 out of 100, based on 24 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[27]
